NEW YORK

Barbara Lehman is the creator of Brown Dog Books & Gifts logo!

Award-winning commercial artist, illustrator, and children's book author Barbara Lehman has been praised for her imaginative, colorful cartoon art, which has appeared in both her own books and those with texts by other writers. In 2005 she was honored for her talents when The Red Book, a wordless picture book that captures the excitement and adventure to be found through reading, earned Lehman a prestigious Caldecott Honor designation. Lehman was born in Chicago, Illinois, and grew up in New Jersey. As a child, she loved to visit the art museums in nearby New York City. She began to draw at an early age, inspired in part by the prints of John Tenniel's illustrations for Lewis Carroll's Alice in Wonderland that her father hand-colored and hung over her crib. To prepare herself for a career as an artist, she attended New York City's Pratt Institute and earned a B.F.A. in illustration. As a professional artist as well as an illustrator, she has worked as an animator, a graphic designer, and a window designer, although she admits that creating book illustrations gives her the most satisfaction. Inspired by Lehman's view of the landscape from high atop a Manhattan skyscraper, The Red Book finds a young girl carried on a magical journey after she discovers a bright red book peeking out of a snow bank on a cold winter day during her walk to her city school. In Barbara Lehman's imaginative picture book The Red Book a young girl takes a journey of the imagination that leads her to a new friend. (Text and illustrations copyright © 2004 by Barbara Lehman. Reproduced by permission of Houghton Mifflin Company.) Opening the book at school, she realize that it is magical; its pictures move, revealing a sun-lit island scene and a boy perusing a similar book. With a turn of the page, the boy's view zooms in, revealing the girl sitting at her desk in the city, and suddenly the two children are able to see each other! Inspired by the book, the girl buys a large bunch of balloons and rises into the air, determined to find the boy's island and leave her own world behind. Telling its story through Lehman's pen-and-ink, watercolor, and gouache illustrations and ending with an interesting twist, The Red Book was praised by Horn Book contributor Joanna Rudge Long for presenting a "pleasing puzzle that will challenge young imaginations and intellects." "As visually uncluttered as it is conceptually rich, Lehman's red book is a little treasure of its own," wrote a Publishers Weekly contributor, while in School Library Journal Kathy Krasniewicz deemed the book a "perfectly eloquent" work that "captures the magical possibility that exists every time readers open a book." In Booklist Jennifer Mattson recommended The Red Book as "ideal for fueling creative-writing exercises." The Valley Stage

Welcome to the Valley Stage! The third annual Valley Stage Music Festival took place in the Huntington Valley in 2009 and was blessed with a gorgeous day while other parts of Vermont were experiencing torrential downpours and occasional hail storms. The great music and food were supplemented by vendors and sponsors with green/sustainability themes. There was even an assessment of the carbon footprint that the event had on the environment. Thankfully, Brighter Planet provided the effort necessary to "offset" us. The day's performances began around 1:00 with Nashville based singer/songwriter Christopher Williams, followed by Michigan natives May Erlewine and Seth Bernard at 2:45, The Defibulators out of Brooklyn at around 4:45, followed by the San Francisco based quartet and our headliners this year, The Waybacks at 7:00 p.m. The Valley Stage is proud to be sponsored by Huntington Valley Arts , a not for profit organization.   Sorry, no pets or glass at the event.

Bow Thayer & Perfect Trainwreck

This band started up as organically as possible. It is hard to calculate the exact time of conception, but one might say it was the night Jeff Berlin was called upon to sit in on a New Years' Eve gig at a local Vermont roadhouse. Bow and Jeremy go back to the days of Elbow and the bluegrass ensemble Jethro in the mid-90s along with Steve Mayone who also co-founded the twisted, old-timey sounding Benders. In the wake of many incestuous bands and off-the-cuff line-ups, it basically came down to who was willing to swim upstream (I-93 to I-89) and play long gigs for short money. For a while it was just the Bow Thayer band and everybody in Somerville, MA was in it. But alas, it was that 3-hour drive that filtered the line-up as it stands today. Jeff and his wife succumbed to the magical allure and raw beauty of central Vermont and moved into an old farmhouse in Barnard, just a 10-minute drive from Bow's house–quite a feat considering everything in Vermont is at least an hour away. Steve settled even further into the urban frontier of Somerville and Jeremy headed north from Rhode Island and made it as far as Uxbridge, Massachusetts. So it is safe to say rehearsal is difficult or even non-existent, which is where the name "Perfect Trainwreck" comes into play. If you have ever been in a band—and it seems like everyone is these days—then the term "trainwreck" usually implies that a disastrous mistake has occurred due to the performers being unrehearsed. Well, with these boys that shit just don't matter because there is a common musical language being spoken here that only comes with experience and grueling hours practicing the lack of discipline. So if you're at a show and hear something that doesn't sound like it does on one of the records—that's OK with us, in fact it's perfect.
